Tom's Marriage Manifesto

If you are looking for the owls, just scroll on down.

Let's just not recognize anyone's marriage, until we can recognize all marriages.

This comic by Mar Bennett:

...expresses what this blog by Tom Ackerman: A Marriage Manifesto...of sorts
proposes we do. Thanks John for sending this.

I no longer recognize marriage. It’s a new thing I’m trying.

Turns out it’s fun.

Yesterday I called a woman’s spouse her boyfriend.
She says, correcting me, “He’s my husband,”

“Oh,” I say, “I no longer recognize marriage.”

....Suddenly the majority gets to feel what the minority feels. ... (Read the post)

So, we can take this away. We can refuse to recognize marriage in the cultural sense. It is totally within our rights, as Americans, to follow our beliefs and recognize or not recognize what we like.

I guess this is a call out to all Americans with beliefs similar to mine.

If you believe that all people should have equal rights, and if you believe that marriage is one of the greatest destinations of a relationship, then perhaps you believe that nobody should have marriage until everybody does.

That’s what I believe.

Seems like a harmless way to make a point.

Marriage, and the guide for marriage is laid out in the Bible. And clearly it is for a man and a woman. There is no question about that. So let's recognize the true unity of marriage, which is two people of opposite sex.

Kristi, you are clearly no biblical scholar as the concept of marriage as reflected in our society today does not in any way resemble the few references in the Bible to marriage. That's okay...I'm not a biblical scholar either. But, I don't represent myself as one either, you poser.

Good point. I was going to ask just what year it was that Christians invented marrage. We have separatation of church and state for a reason. But as a Christian I reach out to you with love, Kristi, in spite of the fact that you would not show the same love for my gay son.

I always am amused at how people "quote the bible" in these things. See the way I see it is if you don't believe in the same things they believe in, than quoting the bible is like trying to sell someone water when they want to buy ice. It has no foundation for the conversation. Of course most right wing radicals don't have enough functioning cells to quite understand that. And so they continue to spout something in a bastardized way that even falls short of what the Bible actually teaches.

I do enjoy your concept here and I'm going to start using this as well! Great post!
