What I am Doing to Celebrate

I probably won't post anything (but I will respond to comments) for the next couple of days, as we are making a quick trip to Palm Springs to tie the...

Oh, just kidding, but it would be nice. Actually though, the trip is to Montgomery. We are having a statewide disaster drill Tuesday in the Department of Agriculture and I will be preparing and taking part.

But isn't it a grand day as equality comes to California. Anybody, from anywhere, reading this and getting married to your same sex partner? Let me know, we will celebrate. Equality for All

for updates from California...365 Gay or L A Times

While reading the LA Times yesterday I came across this, an article about science trying to determine the origins of being gay or lesbian:

Science asks what gay looks like Well, we knew that part about size, didn't we?

Our project this week might not arouse as much curiosity, but is certainly interesting:

From the June 6, 2008 press release about what we are doing this week:

A Foreign Animal Disease is defined as an important transmissible disease of livestock or poultry believed to be absent from the United States. Foreign animal diseases are considered a threat to the United States when they significantly affect human health, or when there is appreciable cost associated with control or eradication of disease in livestock. In addition to disease control costs, the most immediate consequence of an FAD in the United States is the loss of export markets.
This particular exercise will focus on the state’s response to Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

FMD is a severe, highly contagious disease of cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and deer. Humans are not affected by FMD but can carry the disease on their clothing and infect other animals. The 2001 FMD outbreak in the United Kingdom is estimated to have cost the U.K. $20 billion and their cattle market is 10 times smaller than that of the United States. The economic impact of FMD as well as the fact that it is a highly contagious disease makes the preparations to respond to FMD a main concern for the State of Alabama and the United States.

Gays getting married in Alabama. Now that would be a statewide disaster.

Looks like most of your posters are anti-gay marriage Joe. Maybe you need to move out to California.

It will happen... eventually.
Just as slavery, segregation, and bans on interracial marriages changes as public opinion changes, so too will this one.
check out the stats, acceptance is rising. Even the candidate of the major party that depends ont he votes of religious fundamentalists such as those commenting on the previous posts, has accepted the idea of same-sex unions. How long ago would that have been unthinkable. Check the Pew stats I posted not too long ago and you'll find that during the Bush-Kerry 2004 election 20% accepted the idea of gay marriage, and less than 4 years later it's now 38%. You will be on the wrong side of history.

So I guess in 15 or 20 years (or how ever long) when the majority of Alabamians support same-sex unions, dawson will follow his own advice and move out? Probably not and I wouldn't want him to. It would be boring to be surrounded by a bunch of people that think the same thing. We all learn from each other despite our political, religious and philosophical differences.

Actually if you look back you will probably find that most people that have posted here support same-sex marriage or civil unions. It is just a handful that post repeatedly that do not.

And despite what ultra-conservatives like to think not everyone in California is a rainbow flag waiving ultra-liberal hippie gay man. A slim majority of Californians appear not to support gay marriage. It will be interesting to see what happens with the upcoming California ballot initiative.

Dawson,
Dream on. Used to be that people would say "Dream on" to gays wanted to marry. But like the others say, it will happen, progress always does.

As for moving to California that sounds familiar. Do you know my ex-wife? If you visit http://www.advocate.com/exclusive_detail_ektid28192.asp or just google my name with advocate after it, you will come across an editorial I wrote where I suggested gay rights groups put more money and effort toward "red" states, and you might understand why I stay in Alabama. Shia and Dawson are right, at some point same sex marriage will happen here.

It might be on order of a Federal Court, but rarely does anything good come to Alabama without such an order. Mental health reform? Took a court order. Prison reform? Court order (and the threat of more). Desegregation? Took a court order.

For now we can just celebrate what is happening on the West coast and the East coast and hope that it comes together and chokes the prejudice out of middle and southern America.

And remember, the latest Field poll showed Californians favoring same sex marriage by 51-42%, a link which I posted a few days ago.

Another bigot leaves a comment on Bessemer Opinions. Actually what is happening is the nation is finally witnessing equality in love. Go California!!!

This nation has problems, yes but I wouldn't say its "going to hell in a hand basket." If you have ever traveled outside this great country of ours you will realize just how good we have it here. I find it hard to believe that God is punishing us as a country just because we have homosexuals here because, well, we are doing pretty good as a nation (despite the current inflation and possible recession we have low unemployment and a growing economy). And of the problems that I see in the news almost all (theft, murder, government corruption, etc.) are usually perpetrated by my fellow strait people (I will take this opportunity to apologize to the gays for my people's unethical behavior and for all the lawnmowers that they have stolen from you Bessemer folk).

And you may find this hard to believe, but other countries have gays too. I know, shocking isn't it. But here is the real kicker.....many of those countries are doing well also. I mean a good chunk of Europe does not have laws against homosexuality and impose laws against the discrimination of gays (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_laws_of_the_world#Europe) but Europe's economy and stability is only getting better and the Euro is beating the pants off the dollar right now.

And why do you perceive that this country is going to hell in an hand basket? Having people do something you don't like doesn't count for a good reason. I would like to know some actual "God is punishing this country" type of reasons. And again, using slurs in your statements and arguments just makes you sound foolish.

Hey, there have been a lot of missing lawnmowers around here. In fact, I saw a man "towing" a lawnmower behind his bicycle the other day. Since this was the day after an array of gunfire on my street, I called the law. Of course, when the law arrived 45 minutes later the suspect no where to be found.
